The reading passage and the lecture are both about the
commercial trade of fossils. The author of the reading believes that the
ability of scientists to conduct research is impeded by this fledging industry.
On the other hand, the lecturer opposes the specific point made in the reading.
First of all, the lecturer points
that the private trade of fossils has not made it difficult for paleontologists
to access areas of land that contain fossils. Although property owners charge
high fees for land usage, people can use the public lands and national parks
for scientists to conduct research for free. More specifically, even if new
fossils are discovered on private property the government permit excavate them.
This refutes author’s point that the private trade of fossils has made it
difficult for paleontologists to access areas of land that contain fossils.
Moreover, in the lecture, the point
is made that the private trade of fossils has not resulted in fewer samples
available for study by scientists. This is because the museum had a lot of
sample of fossils, which did not studied yet. So, the number of new fossils
available to paleontologists is enough to research them. This casts doubt on
the idea the private trade of fossils has resulted in fewer samples available
for study by scientists.
The final point made by lecturer is
that fossils that are excavated for private sale are not damaged. It is obvious
that companies take the necessary precautions to prevent damage. If fossils had
a damage companies cannot earn a lot of money, so they displayed and handled by
people with proper training. This is different from passage’s view that fossils
that are excavated for private sale are damaged.
While both
the reading passage and the lecturer deal with the commercial trade of fossils,
the lecturer effectively opposes all of the specific points presented in the
reading.
