Some people might think that we need to
understand the past in order to solve problems we are facing these days and in
the future. However, in my opinion, there are many emerging problems different
from the past which cannot be dealt with by comprehending the past. There are
several examples and reasons as follows.
First, rapid development of new technology for
recent few years has created a whole different situation than ever before. This
has brought about new kinds of obstacles mankind has never faced in the past
and requires creative and innovative solutions. For example, due to advancement
in biology, scientists now can have a better understanding on humans’ body at a
micro level. A recent study revealed that they can even modify some of humans’ DNA.
This has provoked fierce controversies regarding research ethics and human
dignity. While some argue that it can be used to cure a lot of diseases which have
been believed incurable, others claim that modifying DNA is ethically
problematic and it can be misused. This kind of new problem requires a totally
new solution, since it had not existed in the past.
On top of that, our surrounding environment
is more changeable and unpredictable in comparison to the past and there is a
new obstacle every day. Furthermore, as globalization is accelerating, even
small problem is susceptible to the global situation which is hard to predict and
this kind of obstacles is not likely to be well coped with by traditional
methods. For instance, a civic war in Syria resulted in a number of refugees
who travel around the world to look for a safe place to settle in. As some of
refugees entered Korea, it has been triggering a strong conflict between Korean
people. A lot of people are complaining about accepting them and asking the
government to kick them out. This is a new form of obstacle Korean government
have never faced before. Thus, they will need to come up with a creative solution
which can both meet Korean people’s demands while considering other values such
as humanity.
All things considered, I strongly believe
that relying on the past is not always the best solution to address the current
problems we are facing nowadays as new sort of troubles are taking place. In this
regard, as this trend will continue in the future, the importance of finding an
innovative solution cannot be overestimated.
