There are various ideas about the statement
that it is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it
is for them to learn facts. I agree with this statement for two reasons.
Firstly, understanding various ideas and concepts
helps students to improve creativity. It is believed that widening understanding
about various issues around oneself is needed to develop a person’s creativity,
and there is no doubt that focusing more on understanding ideas and concepts than
learning facts is effective way to achieve it. Today’s limitless competition has made is
more important to invent and develop original ideas in order to survive and
succeed. Globalized economy has made us compete with
people in other countries. Not only that, development of technology has
made it easier for the competitors to found out what we have made. Therefore, making constantly new things is inevitable since it is the only way to avoid competition. For example, Apple has been able to make
astronomical amount of profit because they created innovative items such as
I-phone, I-pod, and I-pad. If they were only focused on learning facts, they
could not have been creative.
Secondly, student can build tolerance when
they understand various different ideas and concepts. In order to accept those
with different values, it is necessary to understand as many different values
as possible, and learning how to understand diverse concepts and ideas in school
obviously brings the chance to do it. Today’s social structure makes it necessary
to respect differences of those with dissimilar religious and ethnic beliefs.
When people from diverse culture need to work together, tolerance works as a
barrier to prejudice and brings them together. Understanding different goals in
life also requires the same attitude. Other people’s lifestyles deserve to be
treated with respect. For instance, some people choose to exercise, while others do not want. Some
people are driven to succeed in their career, while others are easy-going about
these matters. All of them need to be treated the same. Therefore, it is
important to understand many different ideas and concepts since it can help
students accept the dissimilarity of others.
All things considered, it is more important for students to understand ideas and
concepts than to learn facts. All in all, understanding diverse ideas and concepts
cannot be overestimated.
