Some people claim that teacher’s ability to relate well with students is more important than excellent knowledge of the subject being taught. However, in my opinion, it is more significant for teachers to perform excellent knowledge of the subject being taught rather than relate well with students, for following subsequent reasons.
To begin with, teachers who are expert in the subject make students respect and polite to their teachers. Teachers’ role is to deliver accurate and clear lessons on the subject to their students. This derives from teachers’ thorough preparedness and deep understandings of their subjects, which makes students focus on the subject and be thankful for the teacher’s arduous works. For instance, when I was a middle school student, a Teaching Assistant happened to teach an English class for three months. Even though it was her first time in teaching, she used a lot of activities and tools to engage with students in the class. No one in the class could dare to neglect but concentrated in class, as she broke down complicated concepts into small steps with hands-on learning activities. Also, she made office hours to allow students for consultation after the class. Her excellent knowledge of English and informative lesson plans brought about respect and appreciation from students. All classmates and I considered her as a teacher, for we firmly believed her ability in teaching English.
Furthermore, teachers who are superb in the subject contribute to improving students’ performance. Specifically, students are motivated and disciplined academically when teachers have a profound knowledge of their subject. In Korea, students must learn Korean history, and learning history tends to be cumbersome and boring because Korea history has so many years and important incidents to memorize, which are originated from 20,000 years of our ancestors’ lives. To me, I enjoyed Korean history thanks to teacher Choi, since he used a story-telling method to teach Korean history. With his deep understandings of Korean history, he explained every incident in the past as if he lived in that era. I enjoyed his class so much and ultimately got an A. Without his expertise which goes beyond the textbook, I would not be able to stay motivated and concentrated in Korean history.
To sum up, I believe that teacher’s excellent knowledge of the subject being taught brings respects from students, which also enhances their academic performance. Therefore, I firmly believe that a teacher’s ability to show excellent knowledge of the subject in teaching is more critical than relate well with students.
