When people move to another country, they are subject to have difficulty in adjusting foreign customs. Some migrants decide to follow the customs of the new country, while others prefer to keep their own customs. As for me, however, I would choose to follow the customs of the new country in order to adapt more quickly and assimilate easier to my new surroundings. Now then, I shall compare these two choices and then make clear my preference based on the comparison.
On the one hand, although it seems not easy to adapt to a new custom, people can have an easier time assimilating into the new society when their adaptation to the new custom is complete. In the vast majority of cases, if an immigrant wants to live a socially active life in a new country, it is necessary for them to learn new social customs. According to a survey recently published by "the Association of American Sociologists", those who have tried to adapt American society have higher income than those who have not. Thus, it is needless to say that adjusting the customs of a new land would helpful to immigrants.
On the other hand, it would be good for immigrants to retain their traditional culture in their new country because this allows them to feel pride in their identity. For instance, keeping the values of Asian cultures can be helpful to many Asian immigrants suffered from an identity problem. If they tends to stick on this attitude much, however, they might have a hard time in get along with the natives.
In conclusion, although whether to follow the new customs is not a black-or-white issue, I prefer to follow the customs of the new country. Learning to adapting new customs can teach an immigrant the values of the new society and its people. When the shadows of culture are unveiled, it does become easier to be considered as a member of the new country.
