Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The ability to speak well is more important than the ability to write well. Use some reasons and specific details to support your opinion. |
One scholar said, “Good words are worth much, and cost little.” From the prehistoric period, people tried to deliver their own messages to others. To convey our intentions, we mostly use two kinds of communication with our own words. We sometimes speak to others, and we also write to them. Each method has its own benefits. When we write on a piece of paper, receivers are able to keep it for a long time, so that they can read it when they want. I think, however, speaking well is more important than writing well. Speaking enables an instant communication, and contains our emotion which makes efficient delivery of message. First of all, we can save our time. When we speak to someone, we don’t have to waste a time to deliver our message. We just think, and talk. Compared to writing, which takes more time to write words on a paper, it is quite a short time. It means we can save our time and deliver our messages more and fast. For instance, I once had a chance to prepare for a presentation with my classmate. It was a pretty demanding works, so we had to contact with each other frequently. Was it possible to easily finish our works by writing an e-mail to her every time I need to communicate with her? Probably not. I was able to succeed my assignment because I directly talked to her and used our saved time to be more ready for our presentation. Like my experience, speaking enables a fast and effective communication. In the busy modern days, using time efficiently is essential, thus speaking well is more important than writing. Moreover, we can deliver our emotion as well as our message by talking to others. When we talk, we are able to contain our emotions. Take my case as an example. While I was communicating with my friends, they could read my emotion by watching my face. It was helpful to my delivering messages, because emotions enriched my expressions. I could add my feelings with my facial expression and gestures. Therefore, I was able to represent my ideas efficiently by including my emotion in my face. For listeners, it was really helpful to understand the communications. On the other hand, writing could not include my emotions. The only component in the writing was ‘characters’. So, it was difficult to notice whether I was in a good mood or not. Hence, speaking can deliver our message more efficiently than writing by containing emotion and enriching expressions, so speaking well is more significant. To conclude, we cannot live alone. We need other people who can help and support us. To do so, we have to communicate with others. And there are two ways of delivering ideas, in which each method has its own merits. Though writing has positive effects on communication, speaking has more advantages like saving our time and including our emotion. These benefits allow us to deliver our messages efficiently. Thus, speaking well is more important than writing well. |
