▶ Your Answer :
The reading argues that Genetically Modified (GM) crops are
beneficial because it will reduce world hunger and food price, and increase availability
to vaccines. However, the listening refutes with this idea for three reasons.
To begin with, the reading states that GM crops will
contribute to reduce world hunger, with the example of rice. However, the
lecturer thinks this is not realistic because there are already enough foods.
The problem depends how to equally distribute the foods, not the amount of
foods we have.
Secondly, the reading argues that GM crops can decrease the
food price, as they are more resistant and will stabilize food supply. The
lecturer refutes with this idea because companies which develop GM crops seek
for profits, hence the price of the GM crops is 5 times greater than the non-GM
crops. Also, developing GM crops need more water, which directly relates with more money.
Thirdly, the reading maintains that GM crops produce
vaccines, which are easier to control and disseminate, especially in developing
countries. This contradicts with the listening as these GM vaccines are made of
fruit plants, such as bananas and tomatoes, which are also perishable. These
fruit-based GM vaccines would require same conditions to keep cool, just like
conventional vaccines. (207 words) |
