In the lecture, the professor made several points about why initial settlers in James Town could not succeed settling. The professor argues that it was not settlers’ fault for the failure. However, in the reading, it is written that they are responsible for the failure. The professor’s lecture thus casts doubt on the reading by using several points which are contrary to settlers’ responsibility for their failure. The first point used by the professor is that recently farming equipments were found in James Town which belonged to initial settlers. The professor argues that this finding is the proof that the settlers made effort to adapt themselves to the Town. However, this point differs from the reading in that the reading contends that the settlers were not equipped for farming and fighting. The second point that the professor casts doubt on the reading is that according to recent study, there was a severe drought for that period in the Town, therefore they did not have any time to explore the gold. However, the reading states that they spent a lot of time in searching for gold instead of trying to settle in the town. This point is also contradicted by the lecture. The last point made by the professor is about the relationship with Indians. According to the professor, they had to compete with the Indians because of a severe drought, but after the drought they got along with the Indians. However, the reading contends that the settlers never kept a good relationship with the Indians. This point also cast doubt on the reading. In conclusion, there exist several points in the lecture which cast doubt on the reading. The recent study and findings about farming equipment and the relationship demonstrate that the reading which claims that the failure of settling down was due to settlers’ fault is in doubt. |
