High schools should allow students to study the courses that students want to study |
It is often said that students should be allowed to study the courses that they want to study. Some people might agree with this statement because they think that elective courses help students to prepare for their future jobs. However, in contrast to this view, I strongly believe that compulsory courses in high schools are necessary to students. The rationale behind this is that mandatory courses allow students to explore their career path. Another reason is that these courses contribute to broden their perspectives toward the world.
To start with, subjects that high schools force students to take are helpful for exploring their real interests. Of course, it might be ideal to find their interest early and focus on what they want to study. However, it is commonly said that it is much hard for high school's students to decide what they will pursue in their future because of rapidly chaging world. Thus, students in high school need enough time to explore and carefully think their future job by taking diverse courese that high schools require their students before entering university. To take a personal example, when I was a senior in high school, I had a hard time realizing my real interest and deciding my future career path. However, taking a geograpy class which was compulsory courses in my senior year, I found that I was interested in studying geograpy and decided to pursue in majoring geograpy at college. If there had not been for mandatory courses in high school, I would not have been able to dream of being a geographer.
On top of that, subjects that students in high school should take have a great impact on widening their viewpoint toward the world. This is largely because mandatory courses challenge students to be exposed to new aspects of world. Therefore, students who take a variety of compulsory courses offered in high school can learn and experience other's diverse knowledge and opinions. To be specific, according to the recent research conducted by the Ministry of Education of Korea in 2007, students who attend high school which force their students to take many different subjects were more tolerant of other people's opinions than those who only concentrate on their study that was related to their future job. This shows that compelled courses help students have brodened perspectives.
To sum up, I firmly believe that the advantages of it override its drawbacks. This is not only because mandatory courses help students find what they really want, but also because expand their horizon. On the whole, I definitly believe that these are the most important factor for leading successful life. |
