There is an ongoing debate on which is better between long vacation and short one. Some might prefer short vacation saying that they can concentrate on their study more easily. In opposition to this point, I believe that long vacation is more beneficial because students can study many different subjects, take trips to foreign countries, and have a part time job during the period.
More than anything else, students can learn many different subjects outside of class. Many students and parents feel that they need more diverse subjects to broaden their knowledge base, which are usually excluded from standard curriculum. For example, I learned Japanese at an private education institute last summer. Since the beginner course often takes two months, I spent whole of my summer vacation studying Japanese and finished all the tasks needed. With the long summer vacation, I could study that language fully and in-depth.
In addition, students can travel to other countries. Since people need to have enough time to see and enjoy the nations they visit, long vacation can be a merit to students who want to take a long trip. To illustrate, I visited Europe during spring break two years ago. There were many sites to appreciate such as the Eiffel Tower in France and Roman remains in Italy. Unfortunately, I had to go back to my country because the holiday was just about two weeks long. If there had been more time to enjoy Europe, it would have been more enjoyable experience for me.
Finally, during long vacation, students can take part time jobs. It is a recent social tendency that many companies prefer job applicants who have various job experiences, thus students who have as many job experiences as possible can benefit when they seek for employment in the future. Not only that, through working, they also can earn enough money to pay their tuition fee. For instance, I used to spend my long vacation working in a restaurant and a gas station when I was in college. Not only were those experiences very helpful when I took job interviews, but also I could support myself with the money. Judging from my personal experience, it is undoubtful that long vacation is beneficial for students to build up experiences and earn money while doing part time jobs.
To sum up, I strongly argue that long vacation is more favorable than short one because we can spend the long time studying, traveling, and working which will benefit us. Some people might refute my point saying that short vacation would motivate students to do their school work. However, they have to remember the fact that students need to perform many other activities outside of class in order to be more successful in the future. In this sense, it is unquestionable that long vacation can be a great choice for them to have many experiences.
