First of all, a zoo performs an educational role. A zoo is a place that gathers different kinds of animals from all around the world in order to enable people see animals that inhabit in far away countries. Therefore, by visiting the zoo, people can observe and learn about various kinds of animals. For instance, when young children visit the zoo, they can observe animals with their own eyes that they have only saw in pictures before. It gives many valuable teachings to the children, such as minds to respect animals as a living thing. Moreover, a zoo often plays an important role of animal shelter. These days, many animal species are endangered and requires protection from humans. Thus, a zoo protects endangered animals by feeding them safely, defending them from predators in the wild, providing them environment to breed and returning them to the wild later when they are prepared. There is a concrete example of preserving animal in the zoo. Korean wild bear was threatened due to the expansion of cities and factories. To avoid being extinct, people caught young bears intentionally and raised them in the zoo. Few years later, people released them in a mountain and the bears are living there safely so far. As shown above, a zoo has many advantages to both humans and animals. People can learn a lot of things from the zoo by observing living animals. Also, the zoo serves as an animal shelter to preserve threatened animals. All things considered, a zoo has a useful purpose. |
