In modern society, it has been controversial whether it is crucial to give the prize based on efforts rather than grade. However, I bascially disagree with this position that trying should be major factor for a decision on giving award. This is because it is hard to measure a degree of effort as well as causing high grade students to be discouraged. I will illustrate these reason more in a detail.
Most of all, there do not exist explicate standards to calculate a degree of efforts. Generally, trying could not be considered objective factor. Thus, people whose authority could select students who receive prize, teacher and school master, have some possibility to be affected by a prejudice when facing the moment of decision - making on awarding prize. In a fact, some teachers are biased againist some students. Accordingly, vague criteria trigger some difficulities to make impartial decison. For example, In korea Educatinal Journal, I have read that 95% of high school and university regard the final grades of students as standards to confer prize. From this information, I conclude that ambiguous criteria is not helpful for fair determinations.
In addition, giving prize depends on a degree of efforts could cause a reduction of excellent student`s motivation. As a matter of fact, Among high grade students, there are more intensive competition compared to those of low grade students. Therefore, high level students face difficulities to achieve awards, and it would damage them. Consequently, award system based on efforts could be discourage some superior student. For instance, In high schol years, I found that low level students could easily get a improvement of their subject score compared to high level students who already keep high subject score. This might be considerd a limited experience, but it would partly make sense to support my opinion that the award ststem based on tryings would have a negative effect on excellent students`s motivation.
In a fact, just as the english proverb goes "a coin has two sides", There might be some problem of my assertion. However, I convince that we would find better solution related to decison on awards through considering the final grade as major factor. This is because |
