There is an ongoing debate on whether students should be allowed to study what they want or not. Some people might say that choosing subjects are better choice because students can pay more attention to the favored subjects. In opposition to this point, I strongly argue that schools must not permit students to take the courses they want to because it would take off many chances to broaden knowledge base from students. Additionally, it would put teachers and educational environment into danger.
More than anything else, students could not explore as many subjects as possible. Students would surely choose easy subjects in order to get better grades. This would hamper students to extend their academic horizon, and thus they would need to study again when they enter universities. For example, in Korea, many students do not take math exams because they feel it difficult to handle. They manage to go to college, but they have difficulty in keeping up with their subjects, especially when they major in engineering, science, and medicine. This is very serious problem now in Korea, and universities finally decided to teach those students basic math and science. This current social issue of Korea clearly shows that choosing subjects is disadvantage for high school students.
What is worse, if schools permit students to take classes which they want to, many teachers would lose their job. Since students would willingly take subjects of popular instructors, other teachers who usually take in charge of difficult, boring and unnecessary subjects such as science, math, art, and music would have nothing but to leave their school. A few months ago, all of the art and music teachers throughout the nation had a movement which was against the government policy of abolishing art and music subjects in the curriculum of high school. If students can have chance to choose subjects to take, this social problem unquestionably would go worse.
Finally, this whole possible consequences would result in educational collapse. As many seemingly unnecessary subjects would be driven out of the school, students who are interested in those subjects would take private lessons, which cost them substantial money. For instance, when I was in high school, there were no art and music teacher because none of the students wanted to take them. As a result, one of my friends who had a dream of becoming a musician could not help but to take private lessons and buy expensive musical instruments. Even though he succeeded in going to college of music, but his family still has financial hardship.
To sum up, I firmly believe that schools must not allow students to take the classes they want to. The reasoning behind this is that not only would students lose their chance of studying various subjects, but also teachers and educational environment would be put into danger. All in all, I believe that students should take variety of subjects, which would benefit both of themselves and educational field.
