In the lecture, the lecturer made several points about beer, which would be primitive human's first-grained food. The lecturer argues that the first grained based food would be beer considering their lifestyle and natural process of fermentation. However, the reading contends that it is bread which is considered as the human’s first grain based food. The lecture casts doubts on the reading by using a number of points that are contrary to the arguments that bread is the first grain food in the history. The first point that the lecturer is using to cast doubt on the reading is that for the primitive men it would not be easy to invent the notion of grinding whole wheat, which is the base of making bread. Instead, storing whole wheat will naturally lead it to sprout and they would have realized that sprouted wheat was softer and sweeter than whole wheat grain itself. The lecturer claims that this natural process of storing and tasting sprout wheat must have been occurred prior to grinding it and making bread. This lecturer’s point differs from the reading in that the first grain based food was bread which result from grinding wheat and baking it. Another point that the lecturer cast doubt on the reading is that the sprout wheat’s fermentation would be easier than creating the way of baking. The lecturer argues that naturally stored wheat would sprout itself, then fermentated process would be natural. However, the reading contends that during baking grind bread yeast spores would settled down and lead to better tasted bread. This process is contradicted by the lecture because the lecturer thinks that very clever men would have created this process and this would be more unnatural than sprouting and naturally fermentated beer. In conclusion, the points made in the lecture show the contrast with the reading. The prehistoric men’s natural thinking process and whole wheat’s storing process demonstrate that the reading’s argument that bread is the first grain based food is in doubt. |
