After televisions appeared in the world several decades ago, they have been taking a big part of our lives. According to the survey, people spend their spare time mostly on watching televisions. Besides, movie market is getting bigger and enourmous movies are showing anually in the theater. Movies are a important part of our cultural lives. Based on these huge influences of televisions and movies, I worry about their negative effects on the human behaviors.
First of all, televisions and movies are making modern people more passive than before. Because these media provide only one-way route to transfer the informtation, people only can recieve the information but cannot give a reaction to them. This is attributed to the poor communication skills of modern people and the lack of communication in and between the modern societies and caused many sericous social problems including suicide.
In addition, through these mass media, people are easily exposed to the violence and they accept it as an objective thing. During Gulf war, CNN broadcasted the war in the real time and people absorbed the scence like a game. This process made the people unsensitive to the war. Moreover, the media companies are making more violent and stimulant programs or movies to attract pepole and earn more money through advertising. These can affect especially young people. It is not surprising now to hear the news that a young boy imitated the criminal which was seen in the television.
Finally, the families weaken because of televisions. In the traditional society, family members shared a plenty of time and spent time on talking and getting together. However, after television invaded our society, the family lost their precious time and is not strong enough to support individual life.
In short, even though televisions and movies are providing us important information, news and cultural sources, I strongly believe that televisions and movies are provoking the modern people to be passive and violent and people should reduce the time spending on watching them. |
