People are incapable of being satisfied with what they have; they always want what they don’t have. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? |
There are people who say that humans can reach an ideal state of feeling inner-completeness when they do not own anything by meditation. However, there are very few people such as priests or nuns who can feel this way. Almost all of the others are usually lured into spending more and more, comparing oneself to another and even sometimes cross the limitation to which they can spend. First of all, most people desire to differentiate themselves from others and one of the ways to do it is buying new and expensive products. People believe that owning goods that others do not or cannot have show that they are the first in trying out new things and prove that they are more superior than others. From my personal experience, when I was attending middle school, there was a fad to own newer and more expensive cell phones. As the idea that a kid who owned the newest model was considered the coolest spread, students started discarding their old phones, although in many cases working, just to get a new one. Next, people are living in a society where consuming is considered the best merit. Advertisements on almost every good are posted nearly everywhere we go. Newspaper and magazine articles cover the latest trends on clothes, technology, and even hairstyles. There are trends affect the young generation’s spending styles. A good example for this would be an advertisement on sale in malls. Although people believe that they are reducing the cost by purchasing 50%off products, in most cases, they end up buying more than they need, which lead to overspending. To sum up, people desire what they don’t have and this tendency is provoked by never-stopping flood of advertisements and the want to be treated different than others. Thus, it is safe to say that people are the slaves of spending.
