Undoubtedely, correct information plays a significant role in people's lives in many of the places where they work or play. Some people think that the press is a credible source of infomation, while others do not. Both sides may have their own reasons to support their view. If I had to choose one, I would say that the news is not always reliable. To begin with, the media can convey a biased information to its reader. Journalist and press may have their own views, beliefs and perspectives about the situation. When they write news script, news is likely to be based on the editor's perspective. Therefore, readers tends to for a skewed information about the matter. For example, when I read about the war in Siria in newspaper a couple of years ago, I understood that situation as just conflict about a regime based on the newspaper I had read before. However, after I researched about that matter, I realized that what I read before was just journalist's skewed information. It was not merely conflict about power but a more complicated conflict about race, ethnic group, and religion. Without studying deeply, I would misunderstand that situation only thinking about the view of the journalist. In addition, money needed for running newspaper company can affect the inclination of news. The main source of newspaper's revenue is advertising coming from big companies. Thus, news paper is likely to avoid a feature which can harm big company's profit. For example, big food company was suspected to add harmful ingredients to its food. However, some of press handled it as tiny problem because that company had enormous power in advertising. Many opinions about the disadvantage of toxic ingredients were not sended to the reader of that kind of newspaper. All things considered, the news media can convey a biased information to the reader for the reasons I mentioned above. All in all, the importance of credible information cannot be overestimated in life. |
