In general, the consensus view seems to be that teachers nowadays are more respected by society than they were in the past. In my opinion, however, I strongly believe that teachers in the old days were more appreciated and valued by society than they were these days for the following two subsequent reasons.
First and foremost, teachers in the past more engaged in their students because there were less educational mediums. Furthermore, since students in the past had more interaction with their teachers, students were able to learn a myriad of knowledge from them and considered teachers to their role model. For example, a poll conducted by the Korea Education Organization with 200 parents who have children as respondents is a good example of this. The purpose of the survey is to understand the consensus view about the importance of the teacher’s role. An overwhelming 78 percent replied that the role of the current teachers is less important for students than ones of the past teachers because modern students can study by utilizing the Internet and finding personal tutors. Moreover, the respondents admitted that students tend to more respect personal tutors rather than the current teacher.
In addition, in the past, an educator is one of the most appreciated occupations. However, as modern society has become increasingly developed, the fast-changing world generates various more satisfying and meaningful jobs. These trend made teachers insignificant and affects their students and parents. For instance, I will give an example of my mother’s story. When my mom was an elementary school, she was not good at especially math. Her math teacher never gave up her and tried to help her enthusiastically by spending immense time. Finally, she could solve the crisis and wanted to be a math teacher since she respected him who was able to commit to his students and thought that there is nothing more pleasant and attractive than teaching students.
In conclusion, teachers in the past were more respected since they had more interaction with their students and teachers was one of the most admired careers. In this regard, I firmly agree with the statement that teachers were more admired and appreciated by society in the old days than they were these days.
