▶ Your Answer :
The lecturer argues that the advantages of genetically modified(GM)
crops are overstated. It casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that GM
crops benefit humans greatly.
First, the lecturer argues that the main
problem is not scarcity of crops but just maldistribution. There are plenty of
foods in the world, but foods are not distributed equally. So, it is difficult
for the poor to access food.
Second, the lecturer disagrees that benefit
of GM crops can reduce the price of food. Agriculture companies need to a lot
of money to invent new GM crops and they also expect to create a lot of profit
by selling GM crops. In addition, for planting GM crop, a lot of water is
required and price of GM seed is more expensive than normal seed. So, price of
food will go up more than before because of these reasons.
Third, the lecturer disputes that GM crops
can help vaccines distribute widely. GM crops such as bananas are spoiled
quickly as well as non GM crops. Also if crops are not to be spoiled, the only
way to do that is to keep that crops should be kept cool. So GM crops do not serve as storing and shipping
vaccine to countries that have warm climate.
