Behind the evolvement of human society, there has always been science. Without improvements in science, there wouldn't be a society such as we enjoy today. However, I do not think that basic science should be required for college students. Although it's for sure that basic science is significant to human beings, I can't argue this idea that insists students take basic science classes. Science courses are not needed for university students who are not going to get a job in that field. Also, it can infringe on the freedom of students. There are many kinds of basic science classes such as Biology, Biochemistry or pharmacology ??//(Pharmacology is not a basic science!) Some may not hear one of those classes. Yet, those are literally basic classes. In other words, it's not practical and less-applicable. Even medical students who are related to science anyway tend to avoid taking basic science courses. Since it's not useful that much, they think learning more applied science is more profitable to them. For instance, my older brother who is in Johns Hopkins medical school told me that he protests the opinion of taking basic science classes. According to him, the contents of basic science classes in college is similar to high school's contents. That is, eventually, taking basic classes in university is just repeating something that you've done before which is not even significant in real life. My point is that medical students tend not to sign up for basic science, not to speak of normal students who don't major in classes related to science. In addition, forcing students to take basic science classes is liable to invade the freedom of students. As students usually go to college on private money, they have a right to choose their classes. Also, students in university are legally, physically, mentally adults. I think they can choose their classes at least. Moreover, each student has his or her majors. It means that they need to concentrate on their own work. But if schools make students take basic science classes regardless of their thoughts, students will not be able to focus on their majors which are related to their future occupations. To give you an idea, here's my story. When I was sophomore in university, chemistry and biochemistry were required. Although those were basic and useless classes, there were always lots of assignments. Naturally, I couldn't focus on my major subject and got a C grade in that semester eventually. As a result, it was hard to find a better jobs due to my grades. Many firms want to hire people who make excellent grades, B's or better on the average. To summarize, there are few problems in making students take basic science classes without their agreement. It causes not only infringement of freedom, but wastes valuable time. Accordingly, it is obvious that students should not have to take the elementary or "basic" science classes, if they have taken those classes in high school already.
