1112-MoonShinYoung-Topic 175: Some students like classes where teachers lecture (do all of the talking) in class. Other students prefer classes where the students do some of the talking. Which type of class do you prefer? Give specific reasons and details to support your choice. |
There are various ways of teaching students. These days, many schools and private institutes find debates and discussions as effective ways (debates and discussions are more than one) to educate students. Often, students learn ways to improve speaking skills by debating. Also, it is helpful for improving students’ vocabulary ability as well as helping students to be more confident in expressing their thoughts. I prefer the idea of having students to speak their thought while in class. First of all, by debating during classes (English is a strange language, which stresses the importance of plural), some students can (without 'can' , the sentence seems a bit awkward) improve their speaking skills. Not only do they learn to organize their thoughts, they also learn to speak (why don't you write in more persuasive & convincing way here?) more persuasively. One of the private institutes that I enrolled myself in always divided the class into two groups for debating. Instead of having three hours of boring workbook-based lessons, they allowed students to speak their own opinions. Although it did not look like studying, it had helped a majority of students for interviews as well as debates. In addition, through discussions, students are likely to enhance their vocabulary ability. In my opinion, the easiest and the most natural way to increase vocabulary ability is by having a lot of conversations. The reason why students who have stayed abroad know more vocabulary than others (well, I don't agree since Korean folks usually know much more words than those who have stayed abroad but to be honest, they do not know how to utilize the learned words at certain circumstances, which is a bit strange) who have never been abroad is not only because they had more exposure to English, but because they had more time to speak in English with their friends-of course including classmates and schoolteachers. Lastly, speaking in classes makes it easy for students to be more organized and confident when presenting their opinions. These days, in universities, not to mention in workplaces, students are required to do a number of presentations whether for a project or a conference. While many foreign countries are accustomed to giving presentations throughout their childhood and teenage years, Korean students lack the experience of speaking in front of the audience. They tend to be baffled and embarrassed when standing in front of the crowd. If presentations and discussions are done frequently in classes, as a solution, students will be more relaxed and organized during presentations. All things considered, I would like to have lessons which give opportunities to speak my opinions in front of people. Although it may be embarrassing and hard at first to talk about my opinion, I believe the benefits of students speaking their own ideas far outweigh those of only listening to the instructions of a teacher. Also, I think that the classes, through interactive participations with talking are by far the most approach to efficient lectures. (마지막 문장만 고쳐주세요..^^ approach를 쓰실려면 문장 만들기 어렵겠네요^^) |
