If I have decided to give several hours of my time each month to improve the community where I live, I would be more than glad to sacrifice my free time. As relatively large number of emigrants and overseas students are in residence in my community, I could help them during the harsh process of adaption.
First of all, many emigrants struggle when they first come to foreign countries due to language barrier, a lack of practical information about the culture, social rules and even severe problems associated with their visa. I could be a great source of solutions related to all these common issues as I have gone through them all. At my church, we provide a free ESL class welcoming anyone who has problem with four language skills which are writing, speaking, listening and reading. I could volunteer to help those who have difficulties in English particularly Koreans as I could translate and explain misunderstood vocabularies and phrases. In this way, I can contribute in formation a true multicultural community where everyone is able to blend in gradually decreasing the gap between the culture, society and language.
Furthermore, when overseas students come for educational purposes, they are often faced with many adversities despite their excitement and expectation of an adventurous experience. I have deep knowledge of this well because I am an international student living in foreign country for 4 years. When students have trouble with a sense of isolation at school and at home stay due to language barrier and home sick, I have ability to empathise and give advices on how to overcome. This is because I was once in their positions; therefore I understand exactly how they feel and the strategies to overcome. Through helping the outcasts, I could improve the community by creating a pleasant environment for everyone.
In conclusion, I believe that I have potentials to improve my community through my experiences and knowledge obtained during the years living in the foreign country. Therefore, if I have planned to conduct these community services above, it could be really beneficial for the community. |
