Nowadays, people seldom visit a zoo in their free time and often do not find going to the zoo very attractive or appealing. However, I hold totally opposite opinion to general public’s. The zoo is a useful place which enhances one's knowledge of animals in a wide range. Not only that, it provide a safe shelter for extinct animals.
First of all, the zoo shows the easiest method to gain knowledge about animals and its habitats. This is because visitors undergo hands-on experience which they are allowed to observe a particular animal within a close distance, feel and feed them. For example, Australian Taronga zoo offers a session when one can touch and feed the koalas on trees and even hold them in their arms. Also, they often provide details about animals through information signs, which are consisted of its name, type, characteristics and relationship within environment and other species, seminars and shows. A bird show which is usually featured in many zoo provokes the visitors' interest and surprises them with its terrific skills that are trained or naturally obtained. This demonstrates that the zoo draws people's attentions in a creative and innovative way which furthers their understanding of animals.
Furthermore, the zoo has a role of protecting animals which are in danger of extinction due to a variety of factors such as human activities, loss of habitats and break in food web. The zoo hires zoologists, nutritionists and veterinarians in order to create a perfect and pleasant atmosphere for animals. Zoologists have high understanding of the necessities to increase a chance of survival. It can be combined with nutritionists and veterinarians' knowledge and practical skills to foster animals' growth and reproduction and to enhance their health state can reach the ultimate purpose: save animals endangered. In this case, animals do not have to suffer in desolate and devastated environment.
In conclusion, people who believe that the zoo has no useful purpose do not hold a strong argument but nonsense. The zoo should be patronised and developed further for the benefits of both human and animals.
