Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Reading books about real events or people is more beneficial than reading fictional stories and novels. Use specific reaons and details to support your answer. |
Although some say we are living in an ‘age of internet’, books still have consistent popularity among many readers, because they can provide us with more refined form of knowledge and lessons using diverse, delicate ways. Surely there are many kinds of books – some are about real, historical events or people, while others deal with various imaginary events, which are usually called fiction stories. Although Some people prefer to read books only about our actual lives, I believe that reading many kinds of novels is more beneficial, because books about real events are sometimes boring, and novels help readers increase their imaginative thoughts and power to think differently. First of all, reading only books concerned about historical, actual events sometimes makes readers get bored. As they deal with the events or figures that have actually existed, they might be able to help us look back at socially important events or important figures, but miss one of the important roles of books - escape from reality. This is one of the reasons many people crave for reading, because books which tell us unrealistic, imaginative stories make us forget our daily, routine lives temporarily and dive into ‘sea of fantasy world’. For instance, one famous study about books and readers has shown that 70 percent of the readers read various fictional stories to experience unrealistic, but exciting events indirectly. Not only that, imaginative novels can enable us to observe the world at a different, creative point of view. Novels usually deal with unrealistic, unobservable events and concepts, but their ultimate goal is to make us think about reality differently. They often find the possibilities and phenomenon we barely recognize through our daily lives, and tell us about the value of them. This kind of mental satisfaction could be well exemplified by one book I read 4 years ago. This book, named “Tanatonaut”, depicts close future world, about 30-40 years ahead of now, and describes the people who have become able to experience life after death without actually dying courtesy of rapidly improved cutting-edge technology. This book effectively suggests feasible future technology and asks inscrutable, but fascinating questions, “Where do we go after we die?” To summarize, reading books about fictional, imaginary events is more beneficial than ones about real events, because they can help us escape from boring world, which cannot be done in case of reading books about reality, and make us think differently and dream of imaginary world. Having an attitude to experience as variously as possible is an important thing, and reading a variety of books is not an exception.
