It is better to have a broad knowledge from academic subjects than having a specific knowledge from one subject. Do you agree or disagree? |
Above all, specific knowledge means employment opportunities. As a matter of fact, most college students seek jobs right after graduation. In today’s society, having a job is more convenient, when they have specific knowledge. Thus, people are required to have specific knowledge or technique from companies. A recent survey found that the percentage of employment among the college graduates varied according to their majors. This study shows that more than 80% of the students who had studied design administration were employed within a year after graduation. Meanwhile, history bachelors hovered around 40% or less although the most of job seekers had decent GPA and TOEIC scores. The study also revealed that as many as 60% of the employed specialized in specific areas. This was because companies prefer people who had professional analytic ability of high level in the workplace. Consequently, in the harsh reality, all their effort would become in vain unless their knowledge was closely related with job. Besides, having a specific knowledge allows people to be more professionals. It is common that people are exposed to a huge amount of information in their workplace. In other words, people these days are living in the information era. Everyone can always reap substantial benefit from the information. Therefore, people can be more professional as having specific knowledge. Let me take a friend of mine as an example, he is working as a designer for Samsung Electronics. He has had a great passion for his field: Graphic User Interface Design. When my friends and I went to college for studying a broad knowledge, he didn’t go to college. This was because he had predicted bright future of his field, so he had put his best to studying the Graphic User Interface Design in self-education. At that time, there were not any of places, which could learn about the study. After some years, a number of companies were suffered from lack of professional manpower in the field. This was because most students were not received any of the education for the job in college. After all, he has not paved the way for the field as a pioneer but also has become a professional. Besides, he got the high paying job and was known for top notch. All things considered, by having specific knowledge, people can became professionals faster in their fields. To sum up, I strongly disagree that having a broad knowledge is more crucial than specific one. This is because it is obvious that people who have professional knowledge are more likely to make a chance to get jobs. Furthermore, they can become professionals more quickly. There is no doubt that it is necessary to have specific knowledge for living successful life in today’s society. |
