it is more important to give studnets prizes or awards for students's efforts than acheivement |
Different schools have different kind of grading systems. Some schools score the student’s achievement on their exam papers to give grades and honors. Other schools emphasize students’ constant efforts to their works throughout the whole school year. In my opinion, it is more important to give students’ prizes to those who have put efforts toward what they do. By doing this, students’ will receive less stress and grow motivation to do better. First of all, students who receive recognition for their efforts would receive less stress. All people have their strength and weaknesses, and if they receive different treatments for these differences in talent, it would be very partial and students will feel stress and depression towards what they cannot do. For example, one of my sister’s friends went to a college with her major as social science and her minor as biology. As she attended the biology lectures, she found out that her interest and talent didn’t fit this subject. But she was not able to drop the course because she needed to receive this credit in order to graduate. As she continued this course, she tried her best and put all of her efforts towards this subject. Despite her continuous efforts, she received extreme amount of stress from the failing grades and insults from her professor. After several months of tolerance it eventually led her to suicide. Praising one’s efforts also help them to become motivated. When students realize that they are recognized for their efforts rather than achievement, they will feel the desire and intention to do better next time for a more satisfising achievement. As my personal experience, I was able to improve my clarinet skills through constant effort. In my band class, I had a friend who received private lessons for his clarinet. Therefore, his playing ability was far better than mine. So I practiced really hard in order to catch up with him. However, whenever we took the tests, his playing always turned out to be better. But at the end of the semester, when we received our final grades, I realized that I received a better grade then him. I later knew that the teacher gave me this grade because he was impressed by my constant efforts. Like this, giving higher praises towards students’ efforts rather than their final result can make them to receive less stress and feel motivated for better achievements. After all, it is the school’s role to help the students to improve their weak spots and develop their strengths for the later future. |
