Do you agree or disagree? Grades encourage students to learn. |
Some people question whether grades encourage students to learn or not. Those argue that students can be discouraged by their poor grades. In my opinion, however, they overlook overall effects of grading students' academic performances. Undoubtedly, grades have positive influences on students. It can help students to realize their weakness, and it can be a motivation for students to study hard.
To begin with, students are able to know their exact positions by their grades. They can realize where they are, and what should do for them. Thus, they can spot their weak points easily. From my experience, I have never been tested academically until I was a junior high school student. Although I have had some confidence about my ability to study, I have never known my weak points and accurate positions. However, when I went to high school, I got a test for class allocations. As a result, I was able to know that I am good at mathematics, and bad at Korean literature. Therefore, I could concentrate on my energy to studying Korean literature, and I could go to a good university.
In addition, grades serve as good motivation for students to study hard. Sometimes they could be discouraged by their poor grades, however, whether their grades are good or bad is not important for them. The important thing is that they should be motivated by their grades. To illustrate this point, one of my friends was not so good at studying. His grades were always the bottom one in his class. However, one day, he started to study hard. His bottom score could not let him squander his time. Finally, he got perfect scores at final test, and all of his friends admired him as their hero.
To sum up, grades are indispensable factors to develop students' abilities and aptitudes. They can realize their accurate positions and be motivated to study hard. The purpose of grading students is not just assessing them. The most important purpose of this is to let them know where they are.
