- Many people have a close relationship with their pets, like family members of their family. Are such relationships good?
There is an ongoing debate on whether raising a pet is beneficial for people or not. Some people prefer it by saying that it is helpful for them, especially for their children, to learn love for a life. In opposition to this point, I strongly argue that having a pet is detrimental for people. The rationale behind this is that they would pay too much attention to the animal, be more likely to get disease, and have to spend substantial money. More than anything else, people would too much rely on their pets. People tend to develop emotional attachment with those whom they spend most of their time with. Since pets would be always next to them, following their owners, it is unquestionable that the relationship between them would go into deeper level. This would cause people not to want to do a variety of activities with 'a real person', which could damage their social life. For example, one of my friends who were crazy about raising a dog always did not join many performances in school. He usually returned to his home to see his dog, which made the relationship among friends alienated. Eventually, he became an outsider, and had a hard time adapting to the real society when he got a job. This clearly shows that excessive strong boding with an animal can happen when people treat pets as their family. Next, many pets have serious disease. Scientists recently warned that those who live close to animals can have a greater chance to get disease than people who do not. Moreover, some types of animal disease have not found proper treatments, which would lead a person to death, if it is serious. To illustrate, a few years ago, some children who raised dogs and cats in their house were hospitalized because of strange symptoms. It was turned out that those children were affected by viruses carried by their pets, and fortunately they were recovered soon. Another example is the bird flu, which has taken many people's lives throughout the world. In this respect, treating a pet as a family member can be a great danger. Finally, raising pets costs a great amount of money. Once people start to live with a pet, they have to squander their money on prevention against epidemic, buying food and clothes. This would make people waste their hard-earned money unnecessarily. For instance, when I was in college, I bought a cat in order to relieve loneliness in my home. To my surprised, even though I spent about six hundred dollars on her food, clothes, and various toys, I should have to pay another fifty dollars a month in order to maintain them. Furthermore, the vet said that I needed to have her injected medicine on a regular basis in an attempt to make her disease free. After spending over ten thousand dollars on my cat, I finally chose to sell her to other person. Judging from my personal experience, pet-raising costs tremendous amount of money, which is disadvantageous for a person to live with. To sum up, I firmly believe that close relationships with pets are not beneficial for people. They not only make people too much dependent on them, but also have dangerous disease which costs countless money to prevent for the owner. |
