In the given listening passage, the professor describes the disadvantages of electronic books. This casts doubts on the reading passage's claim that e-books have become popular for their advantages. To begin with, electronic books have short life span, and thus will soon go out of use. As the floppy disk was replaced with other devices, new instruments will be shown up in order to substitute better e-books for older ones. This refutes the reading passage's assertion that electronic books are worthwhile to buy because of their great amount of data storage. On top of that, electronic books are not useful because they are operated by batteries, which usually run for eight or ten hours. Since these power sources need to be recharged frequently, people would feel interrupted when they are in remote areas from rechargers. Furthermore, those instruments require extra memory cards to store more information. What is worse, if they are damaged or lost, people should get additional mechanical service or purchase another one. This is in the opposite position to the reading passage's argument that readers are satisfied with the portability of electronic books. Lastly, LCD monitors of e-books are harmful to eye sight. In addition, most of people do not like to read long texts through e-books, as a recent study shows that almost 88% of subjects felt frustrated when they read over five pages. This completely rebuts the reading passage's point that electronic books are attractive to readers for their versatility and capability. |
