The topic of the reading and lecture is both
about Anasazi civilization migration. The author of the reading believes that
the Anasazi civilization disappeared due to years of drought. The lecture casts
doubt on the author’s claims made in the article. He believes that drought has
nothing to do with migration of Anasazi civilization.
First of all, the author points out that
bones found in the graveyard in the civilization showed signs of malnutrition.
The article notes that in serious drought the amount of rainfall declines and
crops do not grow sufficient enough to provide proper nutrition to people, thus
causing malnutrition. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that
malnutrition was common among people regardless of drought. He argues that
about 45% of the Anasazi people suffered malnutrition and this is because most
of the foods were sent to religious elite.
Secondly, the author of the reading
mentions condition of the settlements shows their response to a drought. The
article states that people blocked granaries and entrance of the village in
plan to come back later when the drought is over. The lecturer rebuts this
statement. He says that it is not supporting evidence of the hypothesis that
people left because of drought. He argues that if it was true that the people
left the town in drought, they would have gone back to their town. However, it
is clear that they did not.
Finally, the author contends that after
leaving their settlements, the Anasazi resettled in places with abundant water
supplies and more rain fall. The article establishes that their resettlement in
those locations prove that they left their old town in order to evade drought. The lecturer, on the
other had, posits that the Anasazis also settled in areas without water. He
elaborates on this by providing an example of their settlement in Arizona where
the land was elevated and had little moisture.
