On special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries, people give and receive gifts in order to commemorate the event. Although people do not always remember every present that they have received, they certainly remember the special ones throughout their life.
One reason why this is true is simply that it is a special gift. That very specialness is what can make it memorable. For example, an extremely expensive present like a car or a sentimental one like a wedding ring is not likely to be forgetted, simply because of its preciousness.
Second reason is that remembering the occasion reminds the recipient of the present. Special gifts are most often given at special times, and a gift at a time like that brings back wonderful memories. Perhaps it was a graduation, a wedding, or a birthday.
(remembering the occasion reminds the recipient of the presnt. 는 갑자기 왜 쓰신거죠? occasion을 기억하는 것이 선물을 생각나게 한다? 거꾸로 아닌가요? 선물이 occasion을 생각나게 하는거 아닌가?)
Yet another reason is that it reminds one of the person who gave the gift. this is special because it reminds the recipient of the gift of the special friendship, relationship, or bond he or she has with the giver. Maybe it was a beloved one such as a wife, a best friend, or even a distant cousin.
(a love one이 혹시 '사랑하는 사람'인가요? 그럼 love one이 아니라 beloved one이 맞겠죠...)
In sum, the uniqueness of the gift itself, the memory of the time it was given, and the relationship the giver and recipient share are three main reasons people remember special gifts and presents well into the future.
