There are a number of qualities that the high
school teachers should have to guide their students in a the right way. While some might say teaching skills or
giving advice on their students’ future career
is the most important one, I would rather choose the ability to help
students when they need help the most crucial
ability among the three given choices. Reasons supporting this claim is are stated at the following
paragraphs.
To begin with, the school
is a place that students learn lots of things, and not
just academic studying. They learn social things such as associating with
people, responsibility and so on. While involving in social relationships with their friends, there would be problems that
cannot be solved by themselves. In these cases, teachers should intervene and
manage those problems; which means they must
have the ability to help them when they are in trouble. For instance, when I
was in high school, my classmates, (comma를 과하게 사용하시는 습관이 있으신 것 같습니다) usually boys fought a lot. Although most of the
fights are were just minor and were solved within a few
hours, but in some cases, they did not reconcile for a long period due to a serious misunderstanding. In order to manage the class atmosphere in good condition, class teachers
should teach their students social skills like compromising to make them solve
relationship problems by conversation.
Secondly, students are not fully matured so they
need help in many areas. It is not confined to school life; it includes
students’ privacy and even their family affairs. Since high school students are
adolescents, thus are not free from their families
and parents, which means they are prone to family violence. My friend,
Susan, for example, had an unfortunate family background that she suffered from
violence of her stepmother. Most teachers did not pay attention to her problems
which caused her deviation from school policies. Fortunately, a history teacher
found out about her problem and gave her
practical help by informing Susan’s father about her stepmother’s violence on
her. Thus, teachers should always pay warm attention to their students and have
the ability to give help actively when they need
it sincerely.
Lastly, although students do need help in many
areas, interfering too much on them will also pose problems. Some teachers are
so enthusiastic that they try to intervene in all
cases. This would rather cause an adverse effect
that students will become too independent to solve problems on their own when
they graduate. My sister had her a homeroom
teacher who was really helpful especially about his students’
future career. However, he was in some part, aggressive, that and eventually decided
his students’ major when they applied for university.
My sister liked it at first but now she regrets for following her
teacher’s advice because she does not enjoy her major now and does not have the ability to search and decide her future career by
herself.
Since high school years are important for students
in many aspects, there are a lot of abilities that high school teachers should
have. In my opinion, the ability to give useful advices at an appropriate time is the most important one because
students are immatured not fully mature, which
means that they need help both socially
and academically. In addition, if teachers try to intervene too much on their
students, they will spoil their students by making them passive and dependent.
To conclude, knowing the proper timing to offer help is important for teachers.
