As for the assertion to the reading, the
lecturer argues that it is not convincing. This contradicts the reading
passage's statement that there are several theories about the cause of the odd
sounds.
To begin with, according to the lecture, a
suggestion that strange noises were made by ocra is higly unlikely. The
submarines picked the noises deep in the water, but ocra whales lived near the
surface of the water. Therefore, it would be impossible for submarines to
detect the noises. Furthermore, if it were true, the ocra should be detected by sonar. The argument strongly
rebuts the reading passage's claim that the noises were the calls of male and
female ocra.
The second point of difference is regarding
the giant squid. The lecturer asserts that the submarine detected the noises in
1960 first. However, the noises disappeared in 1980, although there were always
giant squids. There are no reasons for
submarines to stop hearing the noises just after two decades.
Finally, the lecturer argues that the theory about military
technology does not hold up. Actually, the noises changed its direction very
quickly. Furthermore, if there were other country's submarines, there should be engines noise. It is still impossible to
develop the submarines which can change the
direction that quickly and that silent engines now. In opposition to this
claim, the reading passage contends that the submarines picked up the sounds
from other weapon system. |
