An intriguing topic of discussion at hand is whether
improving schools is the most effective way to progress a country. Although
people may hold different ideas and opinions, I personally support the idea
that the making school to be a better place
is the best way to advance a nation on account of two reasons. First, schools
are able to teach people to be more appropriate and cooperative in our society.
Moreover, students from better school can be economically valuable to the
society.
First of all, advanced education can change people to be a proper member of the society. People can learn
moral and political values from the school and internalize those virtues
themselves. What someone has learned in childhood affects whole life of him.
For example, several decades ago, people did not learn discrimination, such as
racism and sexism, is improper. As a consequence, the society was much more
unfair to African Americans, women, and LGBTs. However, as our society is
globalized and diverse, schools started to teach virtues including human rights,
liberty, and feminism. This education led a younger
group of people to be much liberal and less discriminating. Although our
society is still filled with racism and sexism, I strongly believe that younger
generation is much improved because of the advanced school education.
On top of that, the school
can raise students who are economically beneficial to the country. As science
and technology are developing, a human resource with high education is getting
much more important than ever. Advanced school can teach and raise smart
students who can invent or improve technologies. After they learn science in
the school, they can get a research job or start their own business with brilliant
ideas. The scientific improvements they make would generate profit, which would
finally be distributed to members of the society. For example, Korea was one of
the poorest countries in the world in the 1960s.
After the Korean War, Korea was so
devastated that people were dying from hunger and average annual income per person
was less than 100 dollars. However, Korea invested huge money in school and well-educated students worked hard
for companies. As numerous companies have succeeded, Korea has shown unprecedented progress in the economy. Even they are a member of OECD, which
is allowed only to 20 nations with the greatest economic power. If it were not
for the investment in the schools, this progress would have been impossible.
In a nutshell, although whether investment on school is
pragmatic is open to interpretations, it seems reasonable to claim that
improving the school is the most
reasonable way to progress a society because of the two reasons discussed in
this essay. |
