In the reading passage, there is ample support for the author’s
claim that some features found in its body shows T.rex was a scavenger. However,
the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s
point.
First,
the professor contends that the shape of the teeth of T.rex can indicate it was
a predator. T.rex does have dull and wide teeth which scavengers have as well.
However, it also has sharp teeth growing up to 20cm that are easily found in a
predator’s mouth. These teeth are great weapons that predators often use when
they hunt prey. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that the teeth
of T.rex is evidence supporting the idea that it was a scavenger.
Next, the professor insists that its strong
sense of smell is actually evidence supporting that it was a predator.
Predators are aggressive and they usually go into a fight once they run into
each other. Thus, they tend to avoid other predator’s hunting territory and a
strong sense of smell plays a big role for them to do it. This counters the
reading passage’s assertion that T.rex wouldn’t have been a predator because of
the part of its brain showing that it had a sensitive nose.
Finally, the professor argues that the
direction of eyes, which is a more important factor to consider than the size,
proves that T.rex was a predator. It had forward facing eyes that allowed it to
have a good sense of distance and depth. It helped T.rex precisely measure the
distance to kill prey. This kind of feature is more likely to be found in
predators rather than scavengers.
