To solve the problem resulted from oil spill disaster,
experts have found out the fact that a
certain type of bacteria, called algae, can break down the oil. The author of
the reading passage argues that the use of the bateria in cleaning up the
oceans and marine ecosystme has some flaws : time consuming, algae blooms, and
limited effect depending on the depth of the ocean. However, the speaker
rejects each point of these.
First, the speaker says that slow speed of algae’s breaking
up the oil is not serious problem after all. There are some alternative ways to
supplement the drawback . One of the ways is the use of dispersants, which
degrade the oil faster. This can promote
the algae’s growth as well. Thus, apart from degrading the oil, by using the
dispersants, we can have more algae that can break up oil into small pieces.
Then, we can purify the damaged water more efficiently. Thus, this repudiates
the author’s assertion that because algae eat up and degrade the oil gradually,
the utilizing it in cleaning the oceans is not efficient.
Second, the narrator also explains that regulating the
amount of fertilizer according to the type and size of damaged water can
prevent algae blooms. This refutes the author’s statement that the use of
fertilizer triggers alge blooms whille
reducing the amount of oxyzen. she also mentions the
real example of this to support her opinion. In 1980s’, people actually used
meticulously calculated amounts of fertilizer to clean up the ocean, and algae
blooms did not happen. Thus, algae blooms can be prevented by using proper
amounts of fertilizer.
She finally concludes that there is nothing but algae
which can break down the oil in the deep ocean, cold environment. Though it is true that the the bacterial’s
speed of degrading the oil can be slower in that environment, they end up
manading their job, cleaning up the oil. Therefore, this refutes the writer’s
argumet that using the bacteria in order to getting rid of the oil in the cold
environment might not be effective.
