▶ Your Answer :
The reading and the lecture both talk about
the project of sending human beings to Mars. The reading suggests that there
are several problems in the project because of some limitations. However, the
lecturer said that the problem mentioned in the reading passage can be solved
by several solutions.
First of all, the reading maintains that it
takes too long time like at least 2 years for us to reach to the Mars and come
back to the Earth, resulting in difficulties of sending essentials such as
food, water and oxygen to the Mars. Toward this problem, the lecturer suggests
a solution, Hydroponics. Through the technique, astronauts can produce those
essentials by themselves without any supplies from the Earth. To be specific,
the astronauts can cultivate some vegetables and the vegetables emit oxygen.
Water can also be recycled in the process.
Second, the reading asserts that astronaut
in the long-term space project can be in danger of the zero-gravity environment
in space. For example, their muscle mass and bone density can be decreased. In
contrast, the lecturer can deal with the problem because, there are several
technique for astronauts in the spacecraft to manage effects of the
zero-gravity environment.
Third, the reading insists that astronauts
on Mars can be exposed to threatening levels of space radiation, which is
originated in the form of charged particles from the Sun, adding that it is
impossible to construct a shield for protection of the whole spaceship due to
too much weight. However, the lecturer contradicts this point. She said that
the space radiation are not always dangerous levels. Also, astronauts can
monitor a level of the radiation and avoid being exposed to the dangerous
radiation.
