Some students might say that they prefer
classes with lectures and almost no discussions since they can get much more
knowledge by listening to a professor. However, in my opinion, having open
discussions with no lecture is much useful so I prefer it. There are two
reasons. First, just by listening to a professor, students cannot remember the
knowledge for a long time. Second, through the discussions, students can
improve their logical thinking ability for the following two subsequent reasons.
To begin with, in the processing of just
having lectures with no discussion, the only thing students do is listening to
the professor so they do not participate in the class actively students cannot participate if class only holds lecture. There is no
better way to understand something and memorize it better than being involved
in it without people involving. In this sense, compared to open discussions in comparison to open discussion, it is easy for students to
forget the contents of knowledge from the lecture. For instance, I'll give an
example of myself. When when I was a university student, statistic class which was
one of the required class for graduation was processing was processed in open discussion. For
discussion, I had to think about the subject in that class as much as I can. By
considering deeply, I found myself understanding the subject easily and even
until now I still remember the contents of subjects that I gave my opinions
about. Unlike the statistic class, class of management only had lectures and I
barely remember the contents that we had.
On top of that, it is possible to have
logical thinking ability participating in open discussions. For presenting an
argument about one subject, people have to organize their thoughts. By
repeating these process, people cannot only learn how to express their opinion
easily but also understand methods for adjusting their thoughts. For example, a
study was conducted by a group of education majors in Seoul university to
determine whether having more open discussions could affect a student's logical
thinking ability. There were two groups monitored. The first group was formed
of students who have more than three mandatory class that require open
discussions and the other group was consisted of people who do not have any
discussion class in school. After giving them several questions to test their
logical thinking ability, the researchers concluded that the first group
students gave answers much more logical than the second group. In the following
interview, the students in the first group said the reason was that they did
not find any difficulties during answering since they are already used to
thinking in a logical way. This study demonstrates that having open discussions
is necessary for student's thinking ability.
To sum up, students can remember the
knowledge for a long time and gain the ability to reason by participating in
open discussions. In this regards, I prefer classes with open discussions than
just with lectures.
