▶ Your Answer : Sometimes we should preserve old buildings which have great historical value. However, I think there are also a lot of historic buildings which can be destroyed and should be destroyed for many people's benefit. And there are two reasons for that. First of all, since we have small amount of land and we should use it effectively, we have to use our land to fulfill many people's needs. There are a lot of people who need house, and those who want to build useful facilities such as libraries, stores or schools. It can help many people get access to meaningful activities and their rights to live in good condition. However, many old historic buildings don't have practical value, so it is often a waste of space to have historic buildings. For example, when I was young, there was old church in my town which had a long history but didn't have historical meaning. But, one day it was destroyed and department store was built. So I was able to buy a lot of things there more conveniently since there was no department store in my town. Second, although some historic buildings have more value than just their appearance and some architecture style is good to conserve, there are also a lot of historic buildings whose value isn't good enough. When historic buildings aren't managed well after they were built, they become very unappealing and fragile and they sometimes they are even destroyed naturally when incidents such as earthquake happen. So it becomes futile to not allowing to destoy them. For instance, when I moved to new town, there was very old school and it didn't seen that condition of the building was good. Then one day, the crack of the ceiling of the school became wider and some parts of school started to fall down and several students got injured. Eventually, after that, school had to be closed and students had to go to somewhere else. For these reasons concerning practical issues and how they will look and become when the buildings get too old, I think government should allow to destroy old buildings and build modern ones instead. The benefits will outweigh that of preserving too many buildings, and it will be enough to preserve only buildings which are worth preserving. |
