▶ Your Answer : Some people might say that it is enough to rely on a limited amount of news sources to get infromation. However, in my opinion, obtaining information from a variety of news sources is better to be well-informed. The rationale behind this is that news may impart wrong information and that a variety of news sources help us to have broader perspectives. To begin with, news may provide wrong information with people. There is no perfectly fair and correct news source in the world. Since releasing articles and broadcasting news are done by human hands, these processes involve mistakes. Let me give you an example to illustrate this. When Yuna Kim, an figure skating Olympic champion in Korea, made a speech to support Pyeonchang's bid to host the 2018 winter Olympics, Japanese broadcasting company Asahi misinterpretated her speech. She said, "Thank you dear IOC members for providing an opportunity someone like me to achieve my dreams and inspire others." However, the Asahi subtitled this comment as "Dear IOC members, please put Pyeonchang before anything else to achieve my dreams." If Japanese had relied on only onenews source, Asahi to get information on Kim's speech, they must have gotten her wrong.
On top of that, acquiring information from a variety of news sources enables us to have broader perspectives. This is because things on which each news sources put an emphasis are different having a great impact on the overall tone of the information. Therefore, seeking out a variety of news sources make us comprehend various opinions and attitude towards issues, which eventually broadens our perepctives. For example, when I was in high school, my society teacher assigned a group project researching people's opinions on a new policy. While searching for the data on Internet, I found out that the same policy could be welcomed and condemned depending on people's interests. If I had relied on only one news source for the research, I would have never known that the policy resulted in both negative and positive opinions. To sum up, we are well advised to acquire information from a variety of news sources to be well-informed. This is becasue we can not exclude the possibility of news informing wrong information. Also, we can broaden our perspectives on an issue using a variety of news sources. The importance of my rationale could not be underestimated for the reasons I have mentioned above. |
