▶ Your Answer :
Through the development of technology, especially mass media and the Internet, people can get various information about a hero who is regarded as an ideal person or a role model by society. It is a fact that mass media have revealed diverse aspects from a hero’s achievement to a fault so that it sometimes could vilify one’s reputation. However, I disagree with the statement that it is no longer possible for a society to regard any living man or woman as a hero for these reasons. Although every person has a possibility to do a mistake or a defamed work, most scandals are not directly correlated to one’s accomplishment. If a disclosed mistake is not related to a hero’s achievement and a just minor fault such as personal behaviors, such mistakes could not be able to attenuate the hero’s reputation. Thus, it is possible for a society to regard any living man or woman as a hero. For example, Mahatma Gandhi was known as the father of the Indian independence. He is a political and spiritual leader in India and started a non-violent movement. A lot of adherents have followed and respected him because of his accomplishments. However, at the same time, media scrutiny revealed that he had sacrificed his family and lost the role of the father in the family, but any person never declines his fame in the part of the Indian independence and the political movement. Also, media scrutiny can convey a variety of stories about a laudable behavior of a potential hero so that people are able to appreciate he or she as a role model or a hero more swiftly. It is a fact that media often debunks hero’s faults or weak points, but at the same time, it can provide more opportunity to understand better about the hero’s stories, perspectives, and life in various angles. In this sense, it can promote people to understand the features of a hero and respect him. Steve Jobs was estimated as a dogmatic manager and self-served person due to the media scrutiny. However, at the same time, this scrutiny had leaded people to understand about his goal and appreciate about his accomplishments. As a result, more people have revered his great results in the IT field. In conclusion, it is an undeniable fact that a hero sometimes takes a mistake and misbehaves. However, if such mistakes are not directly related to one’s accomplishments, the reputation of a great person would barely be defamed so that it is possible for a society to regard any living man or woman as a hero. Furthermore, since the media scrutiny can spread a respectful behavior or a story to people more effectively, it even helps a potential hero be regarded as an actual role model.
