▶ Your Answer :
According to the reading passage, the
Everglades in southern Florida is in danger due to environmental problems.
However, the lecturer contends that it is very hopeful because people have
begun to take actions to protect the Everglades from these problems.
To begin with, the lecturer maintains that water
pollution has been reduced recently. This is due to the fact that the Florida government
implemented new regulations about the use of fertilizers. To be specific, they
start to limit the use of fertilizers containing a lot of chemical materials. Therefore,
people begin to use fertilizers with
less harmful materials. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that
fertilizers used by nearby argricultural facilities cause water pollution and
this is the first problem of the Everglades.
On top of that, the lecturer assets that
soil in the Everglades will not vanish within the next 25 years. This is
attributed to the fact that people start to restore the soil of the Everglades,
and this effort is very effective. It is undeniable that it will take a long
time to restore soil perfectly, but the soil is restored at the quick pace. This refutes
the author’s argument that the soil will be blown away within the next 25 years.
Lastly, the lecturer insists that people
are trying to protect wildlife from extinction. The Florida government
purchased a large amount of land which was used for sugarcane farms. They
converted the land into marshland, so animals including the Florida panthers
can have larger habitats now. This counters the claim made by the author that
human development threatens wildlife in the Everglades.
