Some people argue
students shouldn’t take a year off after graduating from high school because
they think that the more effectively students can learn, the earlier they go to
college. However, in my opinion, I think it’s good idea that students have a
gap year to travel or work before going to college for the following two
reasons.
To begin with,
taking a year off to travel is a good opportunity to relieve stress and learn
how to communicate with various people. To be specific, almost every high
school student in my country is under severe pressure due to a national
examination for university admission which is similar with SAT in US. A survey
conducted by the Association of Korean Universities demonstrated that more than
two thirds of student think their academic performance decreases drastically
due to a lot stress and regret having no break year to relieve it. Plus, in
regard to communicating with people, my experience is a good example. I took a
year off and travel around Europe. During the trip, I learned so much about
people, languages, and cultures from diverse countries. I am so experienced at
interacting with foreign students that I’m working as an assistant student for
international exchange students in my university.
On top of that,
working before going to college is mandatory for some students in these days. As
a tuition rises up every year, students have to earn money to afford it. Barely
possible is it for young college students to make such a huge payment for
tuitions. For example, a friend of mine worked in an engineering company during
a semester, at the same time studying in university. Unfortunately, he failed
to get high grades and realized that he should have worked before he admitted
to college.
In this sense, taking
a year off provides students with great chances to calm down stress, learn how
to interact with others, and make a payment for tuitions. Hence, a gap year is
necessary for students in order to go on a trip, work in a company, and so on.
