Undoubtedly, an academic curriculum plays a significant role in students' daily lives. Some people think that economics should be one of basic courses in high school while others think differently. If I had to choose one, I would say that high school should not make economics as one of their basic courses for the following two reasons.
To begin with, students can get a lot of knowledge about economics these days easily by using the internet, so it does not have to be mandatory academic course for them. Today's development of technology makes it convenient to access information very easily without much effort. People can get information about what they want to know easily by using the internet. This means that a lot of knowledge about economics can be acquired without school lectures because it can be reached almost anywhere and anytime by using laptops and smart phones. For example, when I looked for information about Nigeria's economic situation and the currency rate, it took only a few seconds to find out the facts. With the development of technology, economics lectures in high school would not be necessary.
On top of that, if students should take economics as a basic course, it will lower their quality of life. They already have a lot of mandatory courses such as literatures and mathematics, and sciences. Moreover, economics will be a demanding course since there are many sophisticated concepts such as inflation and depletion. For instance, when my younger brother was in high school, he often felt depressed thinking that his life became an exhausting routine. He had to spend the whole day studying all academic subjects, hoping that he could outdo others. He even thought of quitting the school. In this regard, if economics becomes a mandatory course, it will be another big burden for many students.
All things considered, I strongly believe that high school should not make economics as one of their basic courses for the reasons I have mentioned above.
