The lecturer argues that the benefits of genetically modified(GM) crops are overstated. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that people can benefit from genetically modified crops a lot. To begin with, the lecture contends that GM crops are not able to solve the problem of world hunger. World hunger is not because of crop yields but due to problems made with distribution. There are already plenty of food that can support every person around the world. If the problem of distribution is not solved, the poor would still suffer from hunger. This counters the argument by the author that GM crops can solve the problem of world hunger.
On top of that, the lecturer claims that GM crops cannot reduce the price of food. This is due to the fact that making GM crops costs a lot of money and GM crops need a great amount of water to grow. As a result, in general, GM crops are five times as expensive as normal crops. This refutes the author’s claim that GM crops can reduce the price of food, and this will help stabilize the food supply.
Lastly, the lecturer asserts that edible vaccines by genetically modifying fruit plants have the same problem as conventional vaccines have. This is attributed to the fact that bananas and tomatoes which will be used to make the edible vaccines also have to be controlled carefully during storage and transportation. As a result, it is difficult for developing countries to use these edible vaccines. This contradicts the argument in the reading passage that GM crops can solve the storage and transportation problem of conventional vaccines.
