The reading passage contends that the US government should continue to give farmers agriculture subsidies. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument. The lecturer points out that this form of assistance is not necessary at all. First of all, the lecturer points out that the government’s subsidies to farmers do not result in food supply stabilization. This is attributed to the fact that farmers do not spend the government’s special payments (조금 어색한 표현입니다) growing additional crops to make up for regional losses caused by weather problems. but Instead, they use these subsidies to make gas and oil that is are made by from corn. This refutes the reading passage’s claim that the food supply is stabilized by the government’s financial aid. Moreover, in the lecture, the point is made that the government’s subsidies cannot help reduce the food price. Because much of the subsidies associated with farming are only used to grow specific kinds of crops such as corn and soy, food prices in general would not decrease. Also, the fact that agricultural subsidies are not apply applied to fruits and vegetables cause the price of these kinds these produces to rather increase. Therefore, the overall price would not be reduced. This casts doubt on the point made by the passage that the financial aid for farmers can play a significant role in lowering the price of food. The final point made by the lecturer is that the US government’s subsidies to farmers do not help (who?) economically. Farmers do not necessitates the hiring of workers because they usually purchase the equipment instead (-> Farmers do not find it necessary to hire workers because they use equipments instead). Rural residents will not be able to find jobs and to reduce their financial hardship (조금 어색한 표현입니다). Thus, the owners of the farms are the only recipients of the government’s financial help. This is different from the point made by the passage that rural communities can be economically promoted by subsidies.
