▶ Your Answer :
Depending on personal
understanding and experience, there might be different opinions, whether the
grading system in schools motivates students to learn or not. Although some
people might argue that grades are not an effective methods to encourage
students, I strongly agree that grades encourage students to learn. I feel this
way for the following reasons.
First of all, grading system is very useful to motivate students to
increase their academic abilities. For example, a recent study conducted by the
ministry of education of japan reveals that there was huge difference between
two groups of students in performing academic tasks. Students in group A took a
test to evaluate their academic performance every semester, while those in
group B didn’t. The study found out that students in group A were more
motivated to develop their intellectual ability than those of group B. This
implies that grading students’ academic results serves as an effective way to
motivate students.
Moreover, grading system makes students to have a sense of
responsibility. Students today live in a very competitive environment. Thus,
they are asked to prove their ability to get a more valuable opportunity to go
forward, such as applying to a university of good reputation and getting a
high-paid job. This necessarily require students to have more responsibility to
concentrate on their school lives. For instance, my younger brother attended an
elementary school where had only pass or fail system. During
that period of time, he was a student who give up difficult classes
easily, because he did not worry about his grade. However, in a high school
where had a very strict evaluation system, he had to focus on every class. As a
result, it made him a very responsible person. This implies that grading system
is doing important role for student cultivating a sense of responsibility.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that grades are a
considerably effective tool to encourage students by reasons that I have mentioned
above.
