Some people argue that choosing a honest leader is the most
important factor to consider. However, I believe that honesty is not the most
essential factor when selecting a leader. There are two reasons. First, honesty
is not always good in terms of relationship with members. Also, there are more
important factors than honesty.
First of all, a leader has to keep the harmony within a group and make
sure everyone is happy and satisfied by creating a comfortable environment. However,
being honest is not beneficial to the harmony because truth hurt and might lead
to a conflict, which can drop morale. Therefore, considering honesty to select
a leader is not reasonable. I will talk about my personal story as an example.
When I was a high school student, my leader at school band was very honest and
direct so the members are often hurt. This created distance between the members
and the leader because people started losing respect for the leader. As a
result, the group ended up breaking up after a few months. This story
demonstrates that honesty is not always beneficial quality to leaders in terms
of the harmony within groups.
On top of that, there are more important factors to consider than
honesty when selecting a leader. To be specific, a great leader is expected to
be intelligent, experienced, charismatic, and understanding. While being overly
dishonest and bring trouble to a group is terrible, all these qualities are the
elements that people seriously consider when selecting a leader. For example,
there was a survey conducted by a group of sociology majors with 200 students
as respondents. The purpose of the survey was to understand their thoughts
about a good leader. An overwhelming 85% responded that they look for strong
charisma or experience when choosing a leader. They added that honesty is not
one of the top few qualities they think about when selecting one even though
they consider it to be important. This clearly shows that other important
factors are considered more vital than honesty when it comes to selecting a
leader.
To sum up, taking the possibility of a discord caused by honest
leader and more important qualities into consideration, I believe that honesty
is not the most important factor to contemplate when choosing a leader.
