▶ Your Answer :
The reading passage covers three major
benefits that genetically modified trees bring to the world. The listening
passage, which is also of the same topic, clearly shows why the points made in
the reading passage are debatable.
Firstly, the reading passage states that
genetic modification increases the chance of the survival of the trees.
However, the speaker debunks this by arguing that they are normally genetically
uniform and resistant to one particular condition unlike natural trees that are
genetically diverse. Also, few natural trees that are resistant to certain
environmental challenge will survive and ensure the survival of the entire
species.
Secondly, the reading passage contends that
the use of genetic modification on trees is beneficial to the manufacturers.
The lecturer, however, strongly believes that it is not true because companies
that produce genetically modified trees charge more money for their seeds.
Moreover, farmers, by law, have to pay the companies every time they plant.
Lastly, the reading passage says that these
trees are a way to stop over-exploitation of wild trees. On the other hand, the
professor refutes this as he thinks that genetically modified trees will cause
damage to wild trees because they have a tendency to grow aggressively.
Furthermore, they will out-compete the natural trees with resources such as
soil nutrients. |
