It is of great worth to discuss whether when students are given a project on which they must work together, they can learn much more efficiently or not. Some people might believe that it is not effective because all of the students are in different study pace. However, as long as i am concerned, I strongly think that it is very efficient due to the two subsequent reasons.
To begin with, when students do their work together, it can help them to broaden perspectives. When they work together, they can share different opinion on the matters, and give each other valuable advices. Such experience is likely to help them to acknowledge different opinions exist, and further learn much more. A study conducted by the department of education in Seoul National University shows the difference between two groups. The first group was made up with those who study with their colleagues, and the second group consisted of those who study alone. According to the the study, the former group members were likely to have broad perspectives and horizons, which results by high GPA. On the contrary, the latter ones tended to be bigot and peninsular. This result shows that when students do their work with other students, they can learn much more.
Next, a group work prevents students from getting stress which is critical to learn. In these days, students are under a lot of stress due to the competitiveness of today’s society. Especially, they have to study to enter an university. However, when they wok together, they can forget about their worries and stress, and be refreshed. For example, last year I was given a homework in mathematics. It consisted of 30 problems. I had to solve all of the problems alone. It was very stressful. Unfortunately, most problems were incorrect because I memorized wrong by rote. After my professor knew the situation, she gave class a group project. We had to form a group, and each groups solved a big question. By talking with my group members, and discussing the problems, I can forget about my worries and enjoy the moment. Finally, I got a A grade in the subject. If I had not be a member of the group, I would have got a stress, and got failed.
In sum, I firmly agree with the statement that when a teacher gives a project that students must work together, they can learn much more effectively. This is because, first, the group work can broaden their perspective on the matter. Second, it also deters students from getting stress. |
